Article The CO2-footprint of social networks
Social networks are not only risky for users but also harmful to the climate, as both servers and end devices consume electricity. Using Instagram or YouTube generates 0.87 grams of CO2e per minute, while TikTok produces as much as 0.96 grams of CO2e.
Approximately 23.56 million people in Germany use TikTok, with an average monthly usage time of around 38 hours. This results in monthly CO2 emissions from TikTok in Germany alone of approximately 52 million kilograms. This figure does not yet include other major platforms such as Instagram or YouTube.
So reducing your screen time not only protects yourself (social networks are addictive, the reason for cyberbullying, ...) but also helps climate.
