Article How are the climate points calculated?

When you log an action on ClimateQuest, you earn Climate Points for it. But how is the exact number calculated?

To establish a consistent and fair metric, we decided to base it on the amount of CO2e saved. This means that if you save 10 kilograms of CO2, you receive 10 Climate Points in return.

Of course, this approach presents certain challenges: for instance, it makes it impossible to log actions that—while they may not save CO2—help animals or conserve water. Furthermore, there are far fewer data sources available regarding the "ecological footprint"; consequently, one cannot find sources that provide a comprehensive breakdown such as: "You cycled *x* kilometers instead of driving, thereby saving CO2, preventing tire abrasion associated with cars (which is lower for bicycles), and curbing the high-risk extraction of oil—resulting in a reduction of your ecological footprint by *y* square meters." For this reason, we ultimately opted against using the ecological footprint and chose the metric of saved CO2e instead.
